Planting Buffalo Turf? How To Prepare The Soil For Proper Planting

If you've invested in buffalo turf and you're awaiting delivery, now's the time to prepare for planting. You might not realise it, but you need to prepare the soil before you can plant the sod, especially if you want to ensure proper growth. If you've never planted turf before and you're not sure how to prepare the soil, read the information provided below. You'll find four simple steps to follow.

Remove all Vegetation

If you've decided to plant buffalo turf in your yard, the first thing you need to do is remove all of the existing vegetation. This would include weeds, fresh lawn and dead lawn. It's also important that you remove any debris that might be present, including rocks, sticks and leaves. Removing all of the vegetation and debris will provide you with a clean space to plant your sod.

Till the Soil for Aeration

Once you've removed all of the debris from the area, you'll want to get some oxygen into the soil. The best way to do that is with a soil tiller. The tiller will turn the soil, allowing oxygen to get through the areas below the surface. Tilling the soil will also remove any clumps that might exist. You want to have smooth soil for the planting of your buffalo turf.

Stabilise the Nutrients

If you're going to plant turf in your yard, you want to make sure that the soil is nutrient-rich. Proper nutrient levels will help to keep your turf healthy and will work to stimulate root growth. First, you want to test your soil for nutrient levels. Once you know the current nutrient levels, you can add fertiliser to boost any low numbers. It's also a good idea to test the pH levels of your soil. You might not know this, but improper pH levels can undermine growth and can prevent your turf from taking root properly. After you add the nutrients, retest the soil to ensure proper levels. Then, till the soil one more time to allow for even distribution of the fertiliser.

Level the Turf Surface

If you're ready to plant buffalo turf and you're preparing the soil for installation, you need to level the surface. Levelling the surface will help to ensure a smooth lawn. Uneven lawn surfaces can be difficult to mow properly and can lead to uneven moisture distribution. You can use a rake to create an even planting surface.

About Me

Re-landscaping our backyard

When the boys were younger, it was really important to have a lot of grass in the backyard so that they could kick the footy around or chase each other. Now they are older we don't need so much lawn and I want to spend a lot less time watering, fertilising and maintaining the lawn. That's why I am getting the yard landscaped to suit our current lifestyle with a garden that is focused on low maintenance native plants. It's important to make sure that your landscaping is suited to your current lifestyle and looks lovely so that you can enjoy it each day.
